Professor John Hale, The Strategy Guy, works with boards, executive teams and conference audiences that have a strategy problem: a plan that stalls, a decision the room keeps avoiding, or a future arriving faster than the current thinking allows. He is a keynote speaker, board and executive strategy facilitator, executive coach and author of four books on strategy, based in Brisbane and working Australia-wide.

John's career began as a hardware engineer and software programmer before advancing into national technology sales and management. A second career as a director of sport delivered multiple state and national title wins. He then taught strategy, ethics and leadership at five universities: Melbourne Business School, Southern Cross University, Singapore Management University, Bond University and QUT, where he is currently a Visiting Educator with QUT Executive Education.

In 1998 he founded Hale Consulting Group and has since completed 183 client engagements for organisations including Toyota, Shell, IBM, Dulux, Aldi and Flight Centre. Since 2016 he has chaired more than 100 Queensland Government Mentoring for Growth panels. An invitation to the Global Speakers Summit in 2018 took him onto the conference stage full-time, and he now delivers around thirty keynotes a year on strategy, strategic resilience and AI.

His three signature keynotes, Creating a Strategic Mindset, Strategic Resilience and Strategy That Moves, each work at two levels, the business and the person running it, and send every delegate home with a decision they can act on. Rigorously researched and unexpectedly practical, John holds audiences from intimate boardrooms to 2,000 conference delegates. His books include The Strategy Book, The CEO Book, The Strategy Note and The Strategic Accountant.

Watch a thirty-minute keynote

Thirty minutes from a live conference stage, so your program committee can see exactly what they are booking. There is also a one-minute showreel for your event promotion.

Formats and logistics

The practical details.

Keynote length

Thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes, built to the slot you have. The sixty-minute version adds a short exercise so the audience leaves with their decision written down.

Workshops and masterclasses

Half-day and full-day formats for leadership teams and member groups, usually run alongside the keynote.

Panels and MC

John moderates panels and MCs the sessions adjacent to his keynote or workshop. Send the run sheet and he will tell you where he can add the most value.

Virtual and hybrid

Most engagements are in the room, where the keynote works best, but John presents virtually on occasion when the program calls for it.

AV and staging

A screen for his slides and a microphone. John brings his own headset mic to pair with your radio pack; a supplied lapel mic is fine, and a handheld radio mic is a last resort.

Lead time

Three to twelve months is ideal. Shorter notice is sometimes possible; ask.

Fees and travel

A fixed fee for the keynote once John knows the event, the audience and the format. Travel, transfers and accommodation are billed at cost, ex Brisbane.

Before the event

A briefing conversation with the organiser or program chair, the conference theme, an audience profile and the run sheet. John researches your industry and audience before he writes a word.
